Goal for 2008:
30,000 Pounds

Gardeners, grab your trowels! The 2008 Plant a Row for the Hungry season has arrived, and for the seventh consecutive year, The Atlanta Journal - Constitution partners with the Atlanta Community Food Bank to sponsor the campaign that raises donations of fresh produce for local shelters and community kitchens that serving families and individuals in need. Thank you AJC!!!

The Plant a Row for the Hungry campaign was launched nationally in 1995 by the Garden Writers Association of America. The Atlanta Community Food Bank executed the first local Plant a Row campaign in 1996, yielding nearly 160 pounds of fresh-from-the-garden foods to benefit local hunger-relief organizations. Last year's efforts yielded more than 30,000 pounds of food to feed the hungry - surpassing our goal! And throughout the 2000 growing season, we need your help to raise 30,000 pounds of produce!

How Does Plant a Row Work?

Participation is easy! Atlanta gardeners are urged literally to plant one extra row of veggies in their gardens and donate surplus produce directly to one of the designated drop-off sites throughout metro Atlanta. Click here for a list of drop-off sites. These agencies will distribute food from your garden to the residents in your community who need and appreciate it the most.

Many Plant a Row donations also come from gardeners with unexpectedly good crops who can't stand to see wholesome foods go to waste.

Who Can Help?

Individuals

Click here to find out where to donate your surplus vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers to any one of our hunger-fighting organizations. Agencies are listed by county, along with the days and times they accept donations.

Groups

Organize a multi-garden donation or, as some garden clubs have done, grow a demonstration/education garden and donate the crops.

Businesses

Your business or employer can contribute in-kind or financial donations to support our Community Gardens Project/Plant a Row campaign. We would like to be able to provide free seeds to Plant a Row gardeners and distribute promotional materials at garden centers.

Thank You Atlanta Journal-Constitution!

For several growing seasons now, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has been instrumental to a most impactful Plant a Row campaign, benefiting the Food Bank and 16 partner agencies across North Georgia.
