What is Kids In Need?

There's no limit to what a child can learn when equipped with the right school supplies and a full stomach. In the fall of 2000, the Atlanta Community Food Bank developed the Kids In Need program, a year-round free store for educators. The Kids In Need mission is to provide learning supplies for students whose academic success is threatened by poverty. Achievement should never be impeded by financial status.

Teachers are presented with a plethora of classroom and student materials in the Kids In Need store--all free of charge.

Who qualifies?

Every year, Kids In Need is proud to distribute nearly 200,000 pounds of brand new school supplies to teachers in low-income schools. For a school to qualify, at least 80% of the students must be enrolled in the federal free and reduced lunch program or, for high schools, have combined average SAT scores lower than 900. There is absolutely no cost to teachers or schools. The Kids In Need facility is reminiscent of a retail store and is continuously stocked with school and art supplies for grade levels Pre-K through 12.

We currently serve elementary, middle and high schools in Atlanta Public, Clayton County, Cobb County, Decatur City, Dekalb County, Fulton County, and Spalding County school systems.

How Does It Work?

Kids In Need contacts the principals of eligible schools. The principal then informs teachers, who each email Kids In Need and set up a time to shop for supplies.

Teachers may shop once each semester.

Shopping is by appointment only. Appointments are available Monday through Thursday, 2:45p.m. to 4:45p.m.

Volunteers keep our Kids In Need store fully stocked and organized.

How much does it cost?

There is absolutely no cost to teachers or schools. All supplies are brand new and donated by manufacturers, retail stores and school supply drives.
